Speaker Profiles
David Fitchett, MD, FRCPC, FACC, FESC
Dr. David Fitchett graduated from Cambridge University in the UK in 1970, and continued his clinical
training at The Middlesex Hospital Medical School, London. His cardiology training was at The
Brompton and Hammersmith Hospitals where he completed his MD thesis in Clinical and Experimental
Studies of Heart Muscle Disorders. In 1978 he came to The Royal Victoria Hospital, Montreal where he
was director of the CCU, and medical director of the cardiac transplant program.
He is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology, the European Society of Cardiology and of the
Royal College of Physicians of Canada.
In 1997 he came to St Michael’s Hospital in Toronto as Director of the Cardiac ICU (a position he
held for 10 years) and was Associate Director of the Division of Cardiology for 5 years.
Dr. Fitchett is the Chair of the Macro-Vascular section of the Canadian Diabetes Association 2013
Guidelines.
Dr. Fitchett has over 200 reviewed publications, abstracts, and book chapters. His research interests
are clinical trials in acute coronary syndromes, and the impact of diabetes and metabolic syndrome
on heart disease.
Dr. Fitchett is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Toronto and a Staff
Cardiologist at St Michael’s Hospital. He is a general invasive cardiologist with a special interest in
ischemic heart disease, diabetes and heart disease, hypertension and the prevention of
cardiovascular disease.
Dr. Timothy J. Cook
Dr. Tim Cook is a lecturer at University of Toronto, Department of Medicine and staff physician at Mt. Sinai Hospital. He is a specialist in Internal Medicine and Tropical Medicine and holds a Diploma of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene from the University of London, England, as well as certification from the American Society of Tropical Medicine.
He retired from the Canadian Forces Health Service in 2003 after 20 years of service and several international deployments. At the time of his retirement he was the Surgeon General’s senior advisor in Internal Medicine
Dr. Cook directs a travel clinic, consults to the Canadian Forces Environmental Medicine Establishment at Defence
Research & Development Canada Toronto, and is completing a Masters Degree in Public Health Systems Management.
Dr. Cook’s research interests broaden to include the promotion of health. Drawing on his knowledge and expertise of Western Allopathic Medicine, Dr. Cook’s vision bridges Complementary and Alternative Medicines.
John J. Ludwig
Dr. John Ludwig graduated from Queen’s University in 1972. He completed his internship in London, Ontario and went on to practice medicine in Peterborough in 1975. Dr. Ludwig moved his practice to the village of Omemee and helped form the City of Kawartha Lakes Family Health Team in 2008.
He joined the Peterborough County Medical Society in 1975 and has attended OMA Council as a delegate to Council on a continuous uninterrupted basis from 1978 to 2014.
He served as President of the Peterborough County Medical Society , as District 6 Secretary for several years and then as District 6 Chair for several years.
He served as the Representative to the Medical Advisory Board for the Kawartha Haliburton District Health Council 1980 – 1987.
He was elected to the executive of the OMA Section on General and Family Practice from 1987 to 2008 and served as chair of the OMA Section on General and Family Practice for 3 years first in 1993 – 1995 and then again in 2006 – 2007.
He was appointed to the Tri-partite Limited Use Drugs Prescribing Committee by the OMA Board of Directors 1999 – 2003.

Dr. Ludwig was elected by OMA Council to the OMA Board of Directors 1998 – 2003.
He was elected by District 6 to the OMA Board of Directors 2004 – 2014.
He currently serves on the OMA/CMA working Group and the Medical Services Benefits Committee.
Michael Fraleigh, B.A., J.D.
Michael is a Partner at Fogler, Rubinoff LLP where he heads the health law group. He is also a member of the Firm’s Executive Committee. Michael has extensive experience in all aspects of health law including the representation of physicians in regulatory matters involving complaints, discipline, quality assurance, fitness to practice and registration issues. He has represented numerous physicians in hospital privilege disputes as well as in matters involving the management and business operations of a medical practice including billing issues. He also advises corporations and institutions with respect to health law issues. Michael is also an experienced medical malpractice litigator having both defended physicians and represented plaintiffs. Michael is a frequent speaker at continuing education programs for health care practitioners and lawyers on issues relating to health law and medical practice. Michael is the Immediate Past President of the Medico-Legal Society of Toronto. |
